From the start of the season, it was clear that Sport Recife would struggle to avoid relegation. They fell far behind in the standings early on and celebrated their first win only in the 17th round.

Since late July, however, they improved their performance, became more competitive, and for a while looked capable of at least putting up a fight. But after another run of six winless games, they are now 14 points away from safety with ten rounds remaining.

Following their latest defeat to Internacional, the coach stated that the team would start experimenting in preparation for next season in Serie B — a realistic comment, but one that divided fans and management and further hurt the atmosphere.

Mirassol, on the other hand, is the pleasant surprise of the season. They started as one of the main favorites for relegation but now sit in fourth place, close to a Copa Libertadores ticket.

I believe the balanced odds undervalue them. Sport has poor morale, is doomed to relegation, and has only two wins in 28 league matches.
