Betting on points difference

Knockout match in the U20 European Basketball Championship held in Crete.

Israel is one of the stronger teams in the tournament. They topped their group with a perfect 3–0 record, including a win over Spain, which consistently fields strong squads at this age level. They are currently the fourth favorite among bookmakers to win the tournament and are expected to advance comfortably through this first knockout stage.

Romania, on the other hand, has struggled to be competitive. They finished last in their group with three losses, including a 40-point defeat to Lithuania (the 8th favorite to win the tournament) and a 49-point loss to Greece. Their only somewhat competitive game was the opener against the Czech Republic, mainly thanks to some accurate long-range shooting.

There’s a huge gap in quality between the two sides. Even just comparing the physical stature of the players, it feels like men versus boys. It’s safe to assume that Israel will take control early, and even if they manage their energy and rotate their lineup, they should still easily cover what is a modest handicap given the circumstances of the matchup.
