Rob Edwards is enjoying a strong start to life as Middlesbrough boss with his new side sitting atop the Championship table at this early stage. The man who guided Luton to the Premier League has form for getting teams out the Championship, although his departure from Luton last term was with them sitting perilously close to exiting the wrong way. Boro have picked up 5 wins and a draw from their opening 6 league games and put out a weak side when they lost in the EFL Cup to Doncaster.
In the other dugout is another new manager this season, Belgian Will Still. The Saints bounced back last time they were relegated from the top tier, but he has not made a great start to doing that again so far with only one win from his opening 6 league games. The squad still has enough talent in it to bounce back from a slow start and this game will be a good one to send that message out to fans facing a promotion rival at home.
If you are looking for first or anytime scorers here then both teams have a few options for the Saints Ryan Manning (2), Jack Stephens, Adam Armstrong and Cameron Archer can all find the net. For the Boro, Tommy Conway has 2 already, whilst Alfie Jones and Hayden Hackney are both dangerous around the goal. In terms of a result here I expect a close game with both sides working hard for the points. The mood at St Mary’s however is a bit gloomy after a hard season of watching their side lose Premier League games and despite a decent showing against Liverpool in the cup on Tuesday, I think the fans and the players’ confidence is just lacking that little bit to be able to get them over the line.
I’m backing Middlesbrough to push on with their fine form and have a bit more in the tank and I think they will take this 2-1 or 2-0. I can not see the Saints coming back if they fall behind. The away team can be backed at a handsome, (as they say up north) 3.10 with 20Bet to do just that.
