How is online betting regulated in Japan?
Japan has its regulations governing online betting, reflecting the nation's conservative attitude towards gaming. For example, there are no regulations for sports betting on well-known games like football or baseball.
Instead, the only sports betting activities legally regulated are horse racing, track cycling, motor racing, and single-engine boat racing. This limitation indicates a selective approach by Japanese authorities towards what types of sports betting are permissible.
Despite these restrictions, no specific legislation in Japan prohibits players from accessing online casinos or sports betting websites. However, most of these accessible websites are based outside Japan. This is because Japan’s online gambling laws target Japanese companies rather than individual players, allowing residents to bet online through international sites.
Under Japan’s Criminal Code Chapter XXIII, gambling, in general, is illegal, with violators facing potential imprisonment or hefty fines. Notwithstanding this general prohibition, there are a few notable exceptions. These include public sports betting, city-wide lotteries or takarakuji, and the game of pachinko, a mechanical game resembling a vertical pinball machine and a significant part of Japanese gaming culture.
The regulatory environment for online betting firms in Japan requires strict adherence to government rules. These firms are not allowed to offer additional services, such as online betting on non-public events and sports, ensuring that their operations remain within the legal boundaries set by Japanese law.
