What is an Asian Handicap +1.75 / -1.75 Bet?

Handicap bets all have one thing in common, and that is that they give one team either a headstart or an amount that they need to make up before the match even begins. It is because one team starts behind that the bet has the name of a “handicap” bet. It is now lost to the mists of time exactly why and when a certain type of handicap bet became known as “Asian” handicaps with a few different theories going around. From an objective point of view it is likely that Asian Handicaps got given this name because it used to be mainly Asian based based bookmakers who would offer this bet (and other areas of the world did not).
An Asian Handicap of +1.75 / -1.75 is one of the more complex Asian Handicap bets. The handicaps that involve the fractions 0.25 and 0.75 can sometimes be called the “quarter line” and there is something that you need to know about them. The bet is actually two separate bets instead of one, half on the whole number handicap and half on the .5. For this reason the “-1.75” bet can also be called the “-2 & -1.5 bet”, because it is exactly the same thing.
We will go into more detail below…
What does -1.75 Asian Handicap Mean?
When an Asian Handicap bet includes either a 0.25 or a 0.75 then it is not a standard type of bet. What happens is that your stake amount is split into two halves and you basically make two bets rather than one. You are only adding one bet to the betslip and you submit just one bet but when the result is known the bet will be settled as if it had been two bets.
Half of your bet will be placed on the -1.5 handicap, and the other half will be on the -2 handicap. As you can see the average is then -1.75.
- If your team wins by 3 clear goals, then the bet will win.
- If your team wins by 2 clear goals then the -1.5 bet wins but the -2 bet pushes, and so you get half of the winnings and also half of your stake back.
- If your team wins by just 1 goal, or the game is a draw or they lose, then you lose the bet entirely.
Handicap | Match result | Bet result |
---|---|---|
-1.75 | Win by 3+ | Win |
Win by 2 | Win 50% and 50% stake returned | |
Win by 1, Draw, or Loss | Lose |
What does +1.75 Asian Handicap Mean?
This is the same idea as when there is a negative value because the bet includes a 0.75 in the handicap total so it is also in effect not one but TWO bets. Again as before you only place one bet, and you will only get one payout in return, but the way the result is settled and the amount of the payout will be calculated as if it is two bets. This is why the “+1.75” bet can be called the “+1.5 & +2 bet”, because it is the same thing.
50% of your stake will be put on the +1.5 market, and the other half will be on the +2 market.
- If your team wins or draws the bet will win.
- If your team loses but by just 1 goal then the bet will win.
- The team that you have bet on loses by 2 goals then half of your bet loses but the other half is a push and your stake is returned.
- If the team lose by 3 goals or more then you lose all of your stake.
Handicap | Match result | Bet result |
---|---|---|
+1.75 | Lose by 3+ | Lose |
Lose by 2 | Lose 50% and 50% stake returned | |
Lose by 1, Draw, or Loss | Win |
Outcomes for Asian handicap 1.75 Examples
To explain properly it can help to show a real example*.
To be using the 1.75 market it is likely that one of the teams will be a heavy favourite. We are going to look at a Spanish La Liga game between Real Madrid and Valencia. Real Madrid are heavy favourites with odds on them winning at 1.3, the Draw at 6, and Valencia winning at 11. This is why to get the odds closer to a 50/50 chance and about evens either way it is required to add the 1.75 handicap. After this has been applied he odds that are available are:
- Real Madrid -1.75 @ 2.2
- Valencia +1.75 @ 1.85
So if we place a bet of 10 on each, let us look at what each bet returns for each applicable score:
Match Result | Real Madrid -1.75 bet | Valencia +1.75 bet |
---|---|---|
Real Madrid wins by 3+ | +12 | -10 |
Real Madrid wins by 2 | -6 | -5 |

Asian handicap betting conclusion
Asian Handicap bets are a little more complex than regular bets, mainly because of the multiple returns that are possible depending on how much you win or lose by. Getting some of your stake back does not usually happen. It can also feel unusual that your team can lose but your bet still wins as long as they only lose by a little bit. Those are some of the reasons why they are so popular though.
Asian handicap bets are worth looking at when you want to bet on a game you are watching and support the favourite team but with good odds. The handicaps will be in place to mean that you can get odds closer to an even money return if that is what you want. In fact the handicaps can keep on going up meaning you can get high odds too if that is what you want.
-
Placing an Asian Handicap bet is exactly the same as any other bet, just add it to your betslip, addd your stake amount, and submit.
-
Asian Handicaps only have two options, either the + or - of the handicap amount. If it is a whole number handicap and the win is by that much stakes are returned. With European Handicaps there are three outcomes you can bet on, the + and - of the handicap and also if it is met exactly, then that bet will win.
-
A zero mans that there is no advantage given to either team. If they then go on to draw stakes are returned you neither win nor lose the bet.
