Betting on horse racing is documented as having started in the United Kingdom during the early 1600s. In its simplest form gamblers simply stake money on which horse will win the race. The odds were originally derived from the money that has been placed on each horse during the day, and once the race begins the money is pooled and at the end of the race shared proportionally among the winners. These days you are still able to bet and take the “Starting Price” odds but increasingly bookmakers are also offering “Early Price” odds which are fixed. It is a big business, with an estimated $100 billion being wagered annually in over 50 countries.
When we are evaluating betting sites we consider a number of different things, each one important when deciding on who is the best. Because each person has different preferences there is not ever going to be one betting site that is best for everyone, but we hope our research will help you to find the one that is the best for you. We have considered and given weight to the following categories when making our decisions:

Betting on Horse Racing is really not hard, but it does have some nuances not found in other sporting bets. We will cover those in detail later on but the general process is basically the same. All you need to do is:
Open an account at one of the betting sites that we have recommended.
Deposit an amount you are comfortable with.
Locate the horse racing section and navigate to the race you are interested in.
From the race card find the horse you want to bet on and click on the odds next to it, or possibly it will say “SP”, click this if it is there.
You then enter your stake amount to the betslip, and submit.
You will be given a confirmation that the bet has been made, and then that is it, if your bet is a winner your profit will be paid directly to your account balance.
There are several horse racing bets that are unique to the sport, and they can appear to be quite complicated so we will explain them here and now:
Runners | Places Paid | Odds |
1-4 Horses | Win Only Bet | N/A |
5-7 Runners | 1st & 2nd | ¼ Odds |
8+ Runners | 1st, 2nd, 3rd | ⅕ Odds |
12-15 Runners* | 1st, 2nd, 3rd | ¼ Odds |
16+ Runners* | 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th | ⅕ Odds |
*Handicapped races only
There are no specific Horse racing deposit methods, you would use the same methods to deposit as you would with any other sport. All bookmakers have slightly different payment systems and can have their own policies regarding fees, limits, and time frames (as well as what they are willing to accept). There is no guarantee but it is very likely that the bookmaker you join will be willing to accept at least one of the following payment methods:
You can find specific horse racing promotions but these are usually time critical and for a specific race or meeting. It is more common to find general bonus offers that are compatible with horse racing bets.
Welcome bonuses are one of the main things people look for when joining a new betting site. All bookmakers will attach Terms and Conditions to their bonuses and these will vary from one site to the next. It is these T&C’s that will actually decide which bonus is the best so it is very important to always read and understand these.
Some of the main “types” of Welcome bonus that you will come across are:
Specific bonuses for horse racing that you may encounter are:
There are no specific Horse Racing betting Apps but any betting site that has an App and also allows you to wager on horse racing will have the ability to place your horse racing bets on the App. Depending on the betting site and where you are located you may be able to also watch a live stream of the race as it is run. The majority of betting Apps have all of the features of a desktop site the display is just optimised for use on a Smartphone screen.

This is an abbreviation of “scratch” and you will see it when a horse has been withdrawn from a race.
The honest answer is yes, some are. When this happens and a jockey is clearly at fault for not winning they are fined and banned from racing for a period of time. It is infrequent, but it definitely happens.
A Rule 4 refers to what happens to your odds if a horse who was due to run when you placed your bet is later withdrawn. Depending on what the odds were on the withdrawn horse, your odds will decrease by a corresponding amount, the exact % of the deduction is decided by “Rule 4”.
This stands for “No Runner No Bet” and usually comes into play the day before or the day of the race. What it means is from that point on if you bet on a horse but for whatever reason it does not go down to the start line and come under starters orders, your stake is refunded.
