Organized by the Confederation of Adrian Football (CAF) in 1957, the African Cup of Nations is the men's senior national soccer competition held every two years. Also called AFCON, the competition is currently sponsored by the TotalEnergies.
The 1957 edition of the tournament happened between Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt, who also won the maiden edition. The apartheid policy in South Africa made the national football team miss the inaugural edition of AFCON.
The tournament has grown ever since with a tournament being held every two years starting from 1968 before shooting to odd-numbered years in 2013. Nations in the continent must now play a series of games to qualify for the competition.
The number of participants increased to 16 in 1998 and this changed in 2017 when the format changed. Before 2017, the 16 teams are divided into four groups with the two teams with the highest points in each group moving into the Quarter final.
The winning teams keep clashing till the champion emerges and the two losing semi-finalists contest for the third place 24 teams now contest in the competition with a round of 16 played.

All-time Top Scorer ⚽️ | Samuel Eto’o (18 goals) |
Most Goals Scored In a Season🥅 | Pierre Ndiaye Mulamba; had 9 goals in the 1974 edition. |

The host team was the only one to get an automatic spot in the tournament, while the other 23 teams had to qualify through their qualifying phase. Once in the finals, the 24 teams on the AFCON table are split into six groups of four. Each team in a group played against the others once.
The tournament proceed as the two top teams in each group proceed to the round of 16 along with the four best losers. The teams are paired and the winners proceed to the quarter-final stage. The clash continues until two teams compete for the trophy in the finals as the two semi-finalists who lost play for third place. The winner is awarded the AFCON trophy.

As earlier mentioned, AFCON's vast betting options remain one of the exciting aspects of the tournament. Football punters can access diverse markets and we have explained some as below.
Designed for players who prefer wagering on the final AFCON football team standings, the outright winner market is hands down the favorite choice for betting on the Africa Cup of Nations. In this market, gamers simply pick the national football team they think will win the whole tournament.
Since all 24 teams are grouped into six, this creates another special betting option for AFCON punters. They can bet on who will eventually top a specific group or groups.
Punters can also wager on the result of any AFCON match of their choice. The bettor only has to predict correctly who will win a match or if the clash will end in a draw during regular time. It is sometimes called 1X2.
The total goals market is also called under/over bet and this is because punters are allowed to predict if goals in each will exceed or not get to a certain number. This is often for a regular time also.
Yes, betting on AFCON through mobile devices is allowed. However, you must ensure the bookmaker you use works perfectly on mobile devices or has a mobile application.
Egypt, with 7 titles is the most successful AFCON national team. They won the inaugural trophy and won it six subsequent times. Cameroon and Ghana won it five and four times, respectively.
The highest goal scored in one AFCON tournament by a player is 9 goals. This feat was achieved by Ndiaye Mulamba, a DR Congo player in the 1974 tournament.
Only two persons have won the tournament as a player and coach. Mahmoud El-Gohary won it as a player in 1959 and coach in 1998. Stephen Keshi captained to the championship in 1094 and as a coach in 2013.
