Being a professional footballer at Christmas could leave you playing in Grimsby on a cold and wet Boxing Day. However, being a pro golfer means you could instead be sunning yourself in the heat of the Indian Ocean and still have time to get home for your Christmas Turkey! The last major golf tournament of the year kicks off on the 18th December with the 2025 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. We are going to look over the tournament for you here and give you our 2025 Mauritius Open prediction.

⛳ CourseMont Choisy Le Golf
🏆 Title / OrganisationDP World Tour & Sunshine Tour
🥇 Current HolderJohn Parry

This event has been running annually since 2015, bar a 2-year hiatus between 2020-21. No one has ever won the event more than once. However, South Africans have dominated the winners’ list with 3 of the 8 previous winners from that nation. What the competition is best known for is the barely believable 329-yard hole-in-one on a par 4 that Spain’s Javier Colomo made in the 2015 edition. Needing a birdie or better on the final hole, he instead shot straight in!! A double eagle, and the only time this has ever happened on a Tour-sanctioned Par 4 hole.

The 2025 event will include a field of 156 pros flying to the tiny Island to battle for the last chance to win silverware before the close of the year.

Course Preview

One of the most beautiful courses in World Golf, the Mont Choisy Le Golf Course is laid out across what was a former sugar cane plantation. It has naturally beautiful views across both the Island and out to the vast Indian Ocean that surrounds the Island. The course is challenging in parts despite rolling fairways as it includes many water features and cooled volcanic lava waste areas to trap wayward strokes.

Who are the Mauritius Open 2025 players to watch out for?

Let’s have a look at five players we think it’s worth keeping your eye on over the 3-day event in Mauritius in 2025.

John Parry

  • World Ranking: 91st
  • Nationality: English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
  • Performance Last Year: Winner

John Parry ended a 14-year wait for a European tour championship here in December last year, winning by 2 strokes after finishing -14 under par. He is usually there or thereabouts in tournaments making the cut regularly however he has had trouble at the business end of tournaments hence his low world ranking. He started the season strongly but has been up and down in form later in the year and won nothing since his victory here last season. But still warrants a mention as the reigning champion. Can he hold on to his title in the 2025 Mauritius Open?

Christo Lamprecht

  • World Ranking: 147th
  • Nationality: South African 🇿🇦
  • Performance Last Year: T2

A rising star who only turned pro a year ago the South African is showing real promise and finished a close 2nd to John Parry here last time out. South Africans always seem to perform well at this event so it’s worth looking at any in the field for the 2025 Mauritius Open 2025! He won his first professional victory in August of 2025 at the Pinnacle Bank Championship though with his youth his performances are still unpredictable.

Ryan van Velzen

  • World Ranking: 562nd
  • Nationality: South African 🇿🇦
  • Performance Last Year: Missed Cut

Although Ryan van Velzen holds a low world ranking he topped the sunshine tour order of merit to qualify for Mauritus, winning 2 tour events. This makes him clearly an in-form player although admittedly playing at a lower level than some of the competitors around him. The youngster played his first masters tournaments in 2024 and is starting to learn his way around the tour and big events. He is being keenly watched and being tipped by some to cause a shock at this event the 2025 Mauritius Open.

Angel Ayora

  • World Ranking: 121st
  • Nationality: Spanish 🇪🇸
  • Performance Last Year: T36

An exciting up-and-coming Spanish youngster who turned pro at the end of 2023. He brings a real flair to the golf course and is great to watch, bringing real speed off his tee shots. One to watch for the future, he has been making cuts in recent tournaments and seems due for a big performance to make a name for himself. He will provide plenty of interest for fans during the 2025 Mauritius Open.

Marcel Siem

  • World Ranking: 279th
  • Nationality: German 🇩🇪
  • Performance Last Year: T16

To pick someone ranked as low as 279th in the World as one to watch for the 2025 Mauritius Open might seem strange. However, tour veteran Marcel lives in Mauritius, and with only two courses on the island he’s going to know his way around pretty well! He tied 16th last year a big improvement on his regular performances and he was a previous Golf World Cup winner for Germany in 2008 with legend Berhard Langher.

Prediction for the Mauritus Open 2025

With this being the closing DP World and Sunshine Tour event of the year it’s natural that some of the big names of golf have headed off early for their Christmas break with family. However, for those making the trip, a few pleasant days in the sun await them on a glorious course.

I’m tipping Marcel Siem to run this one close; he has home advantage and it would be a great story to see the German veteran make it to the winners’ podium as he closes out his long career.
