They are currently not in great form despite a strong 2024 that saw them promoted to League B in the Nations League with 6 straight wins over admittedly low-level opposition. They lost their first 2 big games in qualifying, home to Bosnia and away to Austria, only managed one win over San Marino and lost and drew with Cyprus, which left them in a precarious position in terms of improving their number of World Cup Final appearances. With the Austrians looking to hold out for an important point, Romania managed a 95th minute winner through centre back Virgil Ghita to keep hopes alive.
