EFL Cup: Grimsby Town – Brentford 28/10/2025

Advancing to the next round
Grimsby Town have had a few ups and downs in the club’s history, they were the team no one relegated from the Premier league wanted to face all through the 1990’s during their spells in Englands 2nd tier. Chants of “Grimbsy away on a Wednesday night” would be directed towards teams in the relegation zone! . But they fell away and dropped into non-league football in 6 years after 2004. They regained their league status in 2016 and achieved (arguably) the best result in the club’s history earlier this season with a barely believable win over Manchester United, 12-11 on penalties. This match offers another potential glory night as they face more Premier League opposition in Brentford. They are in decent form in League two, sitting in 4th place. They pulled off another shock in the last round to get here, beating Championship side Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 away from home. Jaze Kabia hit the winner in that game and he is my pick as a Grimsby scorer. Brentford’s form has been up and down in the League placed in 13th. They have just one win from 4 away games played, and they have advanced to the last 16 of this cup playing mainly their squad reserves saving the bigger players coming on in the later stages. I’m expecting them to rotate the team again tonight, they should of course have too much quality for Grimsby. Igor Thiago might be worth an anytime bet as a goalscorer, as he may well be sent on if they are struggling.
I’m going to go with my heart here, I think a cold, packed Blundell Park is going to prove too much for a Brentford side who aren’t great on the road. Let’s get behind the Mariners to keep their cup dream going by backing them to qualify by any method at a tasty 4.60
