World Cup Qual: Hungary vs Portugal 09/09/2025

Betting on Winner
Hungary opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a dramatic clash against Ireland — a match where they went from dominance to disappointment in a short span of time. After just 15 minutes they were already two goals ahead, and it seemed like they would cruise to victory. However, the second half brought a collapse. Ferguson pulled one back in the 49th minute, and only four minutes later Roland Sallai’s reckless challenge earned him a straight red card, leaving his team shorthanded. Hungary defended well even with ten men, but in stoppage time Adam Idah punished a lapse in concentration to equalize for Ireland and seal a 2–2 draw.
Portugal, on the other hand, did their job with ease against Armenia. Goals from Felix, Ronaldo, and Cancelo gave them a commanding 3–0 lead by halftime. In the second half, Felix and Ronaldo each struck again to complete a 5–0 rout and a true show of strength.
Hungary showed they can play good football, but also that lapses in discipline and focus can cost them dearly. Against Portugal, who look like a well-oiled machine, such mistakes are almost certain to be fatal. Portugal are the clear favorites in the group, and anything other than their direct qualification for the World Cup would be a huge shock. With Cristiano Ronaldo and a wealth of attacking options, they are expected to confirm their dominance in Budapest.
