Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with improving form and a stronger squad on paper, have an ideal opportunity at home against Mainz — who are struggling offensively and fighting for survival — to confirm their status as favorites and secure important points in the race for the Top 4.
Betting on the Final Outcome
Leverkusen are having a rather disappointing Bundesliga season compared to the standards they’ve set in recent years. They will need a strong finish to secure a Top 4 spot and Champions League qualification. Currently, they trail the fourth-placed team by four points and the third-placed side by seven, though they do have a game in hand on their direct rivals.
On Tuesday, they successfully overcame the first hurdle in the knockout stage of Europe’s elite competition. After a 2–0 win in Piraeus against Olympiacos, they played out a 0–0 draw at home in the return leg, comfortably protecting their advantage. With the cushion from the first match, they approached the game patiently and with strong tactical discipline, closing down spaces and seeing the tie out without major problems.
Their opponent in this match, Mainz, is one of the teams battling to avoid relegation. They have collected 22 points so far and sit just two points above the drop zone. A run of three consecutive wins at the end of last month and the start of this one significantly improved their position, but a heavy 4–0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund and a draw against Hamburg highlighted how demanding and unpredictable the league can be.
Leverkusen are clear favorites in this encounter, but they will need to justify that role on the pitch. They have dropped points at home on several occasions this season, and every upcoming match carries the weight of a small final. In recent weeks, however, their form has been on the rise and they look more stable than earlier in the campaign. Mainz struggle offensively, having scored just 26 goals, and it will be extremely difficult for them to cope with the hosts’ aggressive approach, which is expected to feature high pressing and control of tempo from the very start.
