New Zealand vs West Indies – Can the Kiwis continue their hot streak?

The West Indies are currently on tour in New Zealand and they meet over a series of T20, one-day and test matches during November and December. In the following article, we are going to take a look at the opening ODI International in the upcoming series. We shall assess both teams, squads and tactics to formulate a New Zealand vs West Indies prediction for the upcoming match. Read on to get all the details you need.

  • Day: Monday 16th November
  • Time: 01:00 GMT
  • Stadium: Hagley Oval, Christchurch
  • Type of Cricket: One Day (Day/Night Match)

The West Indian cricket team will travel to New Zealand for a winter tour and face off in a series of 11 matches covering all three forms of International cricket. This is a standard International tour with the 3 test matches at the end of the Tour counting towards the World Test Championship.

We are going to focus on the opening match of the One Day International Series, which is a best-of-five. This is due to be held in Christchurch on the 16th November and is a day-night match starting at 14:00 local time. Both teams have a lively set of fans and this should be a colourful and exciting match to kick off this widely anticipated tour series.

What is the latest team news?

Now it is time to have a think about both sides’ team news and current form. It will have a great bearing on the match, depending which players are fit and the ones who are in form will help us when making our New Zealand vs West Indies prediction.

New Zealand

The Kiwis are strong in all three formats of the game and have a solid all-format squad to call upon. In terms of their current results, they have been in fantastic form. They lost in the final of the ODI ICC Champions Trophy to India, having beaten Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh on the way there. They have whitewashed both Pakistan and England 3-0 in more recent ODI series in March and October.

Mitchell Santner is the ODI and T20 captain, and he commands an excellent group of players with plenty of options in both bowling and batting. He himself is ranked as the 6th best ODI bowler on the globe currently. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell are both also rated in the top 20 ODI international batsmen in the world. Michael Bracewell is a superb all-rounder who the Kiwis can rely on with bat and ball.

West Indies

While the West Indies are not the team they once were in Test cricket terms, they can still hold their own in the shortened versions of the game. Recent ODI series results have been mixed they lost 3-0 (3) to England but beat Ireland 1-0 (3) in June, beat Pakistan 2-1 (3) in August, but lost 2-1 (3) vs Bangladesh at the end of October.

They have always had big-hitting batsmen, and currently Wicket Keeper/batsman Shai Hope fills that role. Rovman Powell and the recent addition to the One Day Squad, Alick Athanaze, can both secure runs. Jason Holder is one of their current star players and an excellent all-rounder who can play in all three formats of the game. Pace bowlers from the West Indies are expected to be fast, and Shamar Joseph who made his ODI debut in 2024 does not disappoint. He will be key in this game if they are to make any impact on the kiwis.

Prediction for the ODI between New Zealand vs West Indies

So now we have looked into all the factors, we can make our final New Zealand vs West Indies prediction for the first ODI international match in the series and the series result.

I can’t see the West Indies having much joy in this match or the following tour. New Zealand are at home, with some of the world’s best ODI players and they have only lost to India (twice) in all their ODI matches this year. Back them to claim a white wash in the series 3-0 (weather permitting).

For this opening match and ongoing, there is little value in just backing the New Zealand win. For this reason, I’m also looking at the runs markets, the Kiwis are regularly scoring 300 and over every innings, so if they bat first, then back them at over 300 runs. Otherwise, bring back  New Zealand’s Devon Conway to be the top batsman for the match; he has been in top form against England recently.

Series Prediction: New Zealand to win ODI series 3-0

New Zealand to win the first match.
