The NHL is the biggest ice hockey league worldwide. It certainly has the most global appeal, though competitions such as the Kontinental Hockey League, the Liiga in Finland and Sweden’s SHL are growing in popularity every year.

However, North America’s National Hockey League is still the premier ice hockey competition. Alongside its popularity with viewers, there are a huge number of bettors who place wagers on NHL action throughout the season. We’re here to support those bettors by providing free, expert NHL predictions and tips for ice hockey fixtures. Alongside each tip, you’ll find a thorough explanation of the reasoning behind it, considering stats such as Skating Leaders, Goaltending Leaders, Save Percentage and Power Play Percentage.

How We Prepare Our NHL Predictions

When we develop our NHL betting tips, there are many factors we take into consideration. Each detail is studied meticulously in order to build our tips. Any aspect that can have an impact on how the events of a particular NHL match might unfold is researched. This includes team and player form, player availability and head-to-head records.

In addition, we look for value. We always try to find betting value for all of our NHL predictions, which is what our research helps us to do.

    Updated Data and Statistics

Analysing current statistics such as team form and team stats can help us assess how a fixture might play out. There’s a huge amount of data available for the NHL, and we use all of it to develop our predictions. In particular, we analyse stats like Goals per Game, Penalty Minutes and Power Play, alongside Goals Against, Shutouts and Save Percentage.

Once we have collated this information, we can then begin to build our NHL betting tips.

    Player Performance

Studying a player’s recent performances can go a long way in deciding how they’re likely to perform in their next fixture. A player who has been performing well in recent games might be likely to continue that good vein of form. Similarly, a player who has struggled might find it difficult to perform well.

    Odds Analysis and Value Bets

Finding the best odds is key to successful NHL betting. We look for competitive odds on a variety of markets, those which present value. By undertaking research, we give ourselves the best chance of finding value bets, those bets that have a better chance of success than the bookmaker believes they do.

Who are the best NHL teams?

There are some famous names in the National Hockey League that will be familiar to all sports fans, not just fans of ice hockey. We’ve picked our top three sides from this season so far, those that are aiming to make the playoffs and ultimately win the Stanley Cup.

  • Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche have had an excellent start to their 25/26 campaign. At the time of writing, they sit top of the Central Division in the Western Conference and are looking to win their fourth Stanley Cup in their history. The Avalanche are the only active side in NHL history to win all of their Stanley Cup appearances.

The Avs are based in Denver, Colorado and play their home games at Ball Arena. They’ve won three Stanley Cups, three Conference Championships and 12 Division Championships.

  • Detroit Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings are one of the biggest names in the NHL. They hold the record for most Stanley Cup wins by a side based in the USA, with 11, although their last success came back in 2008. They’ve started the 25/26 campaign well, currently sitting top of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Wings are based in Detroit, Michigan and play their home games at Little Caesars Arena. Alongside their 11 Stanley Cup wins, they’ve won six Conference Championships and 19 Division Championships.

  • Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes have enjoyed a great start to their season and, at the time of writing, sit top of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. They’ll be hoping they can progress further than last season’s performance, where they reached the Eastern Conference playoff finals. Ice Hockey Betting Markets we will use

As it's such a popular sports competition, you’ll find NHL betting markets at the majority of bookmakers across the globe. Our tips and predictions are based on a variety of markets, as we look to find where the betting value lies.

The most common markets you’ll find in our NHL predictions include the following:

Outright Winner Bets

One of the simplest ways to bet on the NHL is to bet on who you think will win the Stanley Cup. Stanley Cup Winner odds are available before the season starts and throughout. In addition to Outright odds for Stanley Cup winners, some operators also provide odds for Conference and Division outright winners, as well as odds on which teams will make the Playoffs.

Match Winner Bets

When it comes to betting on individual matches, the easiest market to understand is the Match Winner, or Moneyline, market. With this bet, you’re simply wagering on which side you believe will win the match in question.

Handicap Bets

Handicap betting, also known as Puck Line or Line betting, gives a hypothetical advantage or disadvantage to a team. The Line is usually set at 1.5, so you’re giving a team a 1.5 goal advantage, or disadvantage. Handicap bets are popular as they can provide better odds than a standard Match Winner bet.

Total goals O/U

Totals markets are popular in a number of sports. For NHL betting, the Total Goals Over/Under market can present greater betting value than other common bet types. With this bet, you’re wagering on how many goals will be scored in a game, over or under a specified amount.

Goalscorer

Goalscorer bets tend to have much higher odds than many other markets. They’re more difficult to get right, though, but do present a lot of value. Most operators allow their bettors to place wagers on First, Last and Anytime Goalscorer markets. The Anytime Goalscorer market usually has much shorter odds than First or Last markets.

NHL betting terms explained

When you start betting on the NHL, you’ll come across a variety of terms associated with ice hockey. We’re here to explain these terms to you and how they work with NHL betting.

Money Line

A Money Line bet is the easiest way to bet on the NHL. You’re simply betting on which team you think will win the game. On occasion, the draw will be an option. Note this is just available for regular time. In ice hockey, if the two sides are drawing at the end of regular time, the game will head into Overtime and then to a Shootout in order to decide the winner.

Puck Line

If you’re familiar with handicap betting, Puck Line is similar. With a Puck Line bet, you’re giving a side a hypothetical advantage or disadvantage. This can be a great way to lengthen the odds.

Alternative Puck Line

A typical Puck Line bet will be set at 1.5. Alternative Puck Line bets offer more variety, which in turn can stretch the odds. The Alternative Puck Line market will feature spread lines such as 0.5, 2.5 and 3.5.

Game Totals

A hugely popular NHL betting market is the Totals market. With this market, bettors are wagering on how many goals will be scored in a specific NHL match, over or under a set number.

Alternative Game Totals

As with the Alternative Puck Line market, the Alternative Game Totals market offers more choice in the set number given. For instance, a standard Game Totals market will be set at between 5.5 goals and 7.5 goals. The Alternative market can have many more options, ranging from 1.5 goals to 10.5 goals at most betting sites.

Parlay

A Parlay bet is essentially an accumulator bet. In a Parlay bet, bettors combine different selections, or legs, to make one whole bet. For the Parley to be successful, each selection must win. If one leg fails to win, the whole bet is lost.

FAQ. Frequently Asked Questions

  • đź’ˇ What is the best way to bet on the NHL?

If you’re new to betting on NHL action, we recommend you start with markets that are easy to understand, such as Moneyline. When you understand how the NHL works and in turn improve your knowledge base, you could then start looking at more complicated markets.

  • đź’ˇ Can I make money constantly with NHL betting?

It’s difficult to win any sports bet. As such, you should never approach NHL betting as a way to make an income. To give yourself the best chance of placing successful bets, make sure you conduct thorough research into the match you’re looking to bet on.

  • đź’ˇ Why do odds change before a NHL match?

Odds can change for a variety of reasons. A common reason is betting volume. For example, if a particular market has received a large number of bets, the operator is likely to shorten these odds. Similarly, if a market has received very few bets, the operator might be inclined to increase these odds.

  • đź’ˇ Should I follow one NHL tipster or multiple?

We recommend that you follow all of our experts, as they all have proven records of success. Following more than one tipster can also help you spot markets you might not have considered, as well as help you find value odds.
