The Hawaiian Open has a long history as a golf tournament, having first been played way back in 1965. It’s currently played within the PGA Tour and, being in the United States, usually attracts a good field of North American and Asian golfers. Taking place in early January, it’s seen as a good tournament to get an idea of players’ form at the start of the new year.

American winners have dominated things in the past, though no one has ever won this more than twice. Canadian Nick Taylor won last year’s event in a playoff against Colombian Nico Echavarría. He will be looking to defend his title, hoping to emulate two time winner Jimmy Walker who won back to back titles here in 2014 & 2015.

Course Details

The course has been in Hawaii since 1927 and is known for low scores by players. That is despite plenty of water hazards and some tricky greens. It’s home to the iconic 16th “W” hole which includes bunkers and rough patches to create the W shaped hole known around the USA.

Who are the 2026 Hawaiian Open players to watch out for?

So let’s take a bit of time to look at some of the main contenders for this year’s Hawaiian Open. With the start list all confirmed, we are going to pick 5 players we think it’s worth following over the 3 days of upcoming action. Four of these have all won the event before and looking at the field it should be an interesting fews days’ play.

  • Nick Taylor

    • Nationality: Canadian
    • PGA Tour Ranking: 56th
    • Past Best at Hawaii: Won 2025

Nick Taylor won a thriller here last year and is back for the 2026 Hawaii Open. He will want to put in a good showing while defending his title. He’s not in top form however heading into this. He came in 18th down in South Africa in December – the last tournament he played, and was some 15 shots off the leader. He is also 56th on the PGA Tour so a repeat win looks unlikely this year, though you never know.

  • Russell Henley

    • Nationality: American
    • PGA Tour Ranking: 5th
    • Past Best at Hawaii: Won 2013

A well known name on the PGA Tour and across the globe, Russel Henley is currently rated as the World’s 5th best golfer. He often appears in the top 10 in many metrics showing that he has well rounded stroke play when he is playing. This includes Strokes Gained (Approach & Putting), FedExCup points (5th), and is highly placed in Greens in Regulation. He won here back in 2013 so will know his way around the course.

  • Hideki Matsuyama

    • Nationality: Japanese
    • PGA Tour Ranking: 17th
    • Record: Won 2020

Hideki won here back in 2020 and picked up a number of fans in doing so. The flamboyant player is a crowd favourite and will get plenty of fans cheering him on around the greens. He won the Albany Open at the start of December in a playoff and looked impressive doing so, showing good form just a month away from the start of the 2026 Hawaii Open, making him one of our players to keep an eye on here. He has also made it into the top 20 on the PGA Tour which is no mean feat.

  • Si Woo Kim

    • Nationality: South Korean
    • PGA Tour Ranking: 46th
    • Record: Won 2023

Despite rumours that he was moving to the LIV tour this year, Si Woo Kim has confirmed his place in the 2026 Hawaii open. He won this event back in 2023. Despite being down in 46th on the PGA Tour, he is still a top golfer on his day. He finished 3rd at the Melbourne Australian Open at the start of December so is clearly in good form coming into this tournament and will want to have a good showing on a course he knows well.

  • Anson Cabello

    • Nationality: American
    • PGA Tour Ranking: Amateur
    • Record: Debut

Anson is a local Hawaiian and gained his amateur spot in the field when he won the November 2025 qualifier. He attends the local Hawaiian University and will no doubt have a large number of friends and family in the crowd cheering him on every shot. While we aren’t suggesting the 20 year old will win the 2026 Hawaii open, he will know the course and layout and have plenty of support. It will be interesting to see how he gets on. He tied 2nd in the 2024 Kapolei Invitational, his best result to date.

Prediction for the 2026 Hawaiian Open

We have 4 good contenders profiled here and one of interest. This being the first event of 2026, everyone will be taking it very seriously and hoping to make an early mark for the year. With such an early event there could definitely be an upset as well, as players will often have had a holiday break over December. I think for this one play it safe and go for someone solid and reliable, using an offer or bonus if possible to play extra places. That’s why I’m picking Russell Henley as your best pick for this one.
