The first semifinal of the Spanish Supercup brings an exceptionally attractive clash.
Unicaja is defending the trophy they won last season by beating Real Madrid in the final. They opened the new campaign with yet another piece of silverware – the Intercontinental Cup. While it may not be the most prestigious competition, every trophy adds confidence. After a brilliant season last year, it was expected that they would lose a few key players to EuroLeague clubs. Still, there is no doubt they will continue to play quality basketball this season, even if their new signings will need some time to settle in.
On the other hand, Valencia enters the season with big ambitions. They are back in the EuroLeague, have a new arena, and boast a refreshed roster that looks very strong on paper. In their final test before the start of the season, they crushed Baskonia on the road with a 99–84 victory. Friendly games should always be taken with caution, but it is clear that Valencia will once again focus on fast-paced play and high offensive output this year.
Malaga has the honor of hosting the tournament, so Unicaja will enjoy a slight home-court advantage. Still, we can expect an exciting and high-quality game, one where attacking basketball is likely to dominate. Small details will probably decide the outcome…
