With the 2026 World Cup nearing its start date, excitement is growing for bettors with a wide range of markets to pick from. We are going to look at the popular Golden Boot competition market in this article. We will preview several players and create a World Cup Golden Boot Prediction for you to consider. With extra knockout games to play, this could be a chance for someone to challenge the extraordinary record of 13 goals in one tournament scored by Just Fontaine back in 1958.

Originally known as the golden shoe, the golden boot is now one of the most highly prized individual awards a footballer can win. The winners list includes some absolute goalscoring legends – Ronaldo, Eusebio, Kempes, Lineker, Suker, Klose, Stoichkov, Muller and Fontaine. And those are the ones that have retired!

The award is simply given to the player who scores the most goals in the tournament, with no consideration of games or minutes played taken into account. It’s a popular betting market and often has offers attached to by sportsbooks as well, including odds boosts and money-back promotions.

Who are the Golden Boot Players to watch out for?

With so many teams, and them all having leading goalscorers, competition for this year’s Golden Boot will be fierce. Below we profile 6 players that we think are in with a good shout of lifting the famous prize.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

    • Nation: Portugal
    • Caps / Goals: 266, 143
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: 5 tournaments, 22 games, 8 goals
    • Group Games: Colombia, Uzbekistan (DR Congo, Jamaica or New Caledonia)

The only player to have scored in 5 tournaments and the World’s top international goalscorer has to be worth a mention. He is still in fine form despite being over 40! He scored 8 goals in the 2024/25 Nations League and a further 5 goals in WC Qualifying. He hasn’t always lit up World Cups, only scoring more than once in 2018,  but he should have some weaker group stage defences to target before the Knockout stages.

  • Erling Haaland

    • Nation: Norway
    • Caps / Goals: 48,55
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: Debut
    • Group Games: France, Senegal, (Iraq, Bolivia, Suriname)

Haaland is a goal machine as his goals-to-caps record shows! This will be his first World Cup Finals and the group could have been easier,  but he has been scoring against top defences his whole life and is Norway’s main focal point. He pretty much scores almost all their goals when they do find the net. He top-scored in the UEFA WC qualifying section with 16 goals.

  • Kylan Mpbappe

    • Nation: France
    • Caps / Goals: 94,55
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: 2 Finals, 14 games, 12 goals
    • Group Games: Norway, Senegal, (Iraq, Bolivia, Suriname)

One of the stars of the last 2 World Cups. He will be 26 for this one, which is usually the WC, which you would feel would be at a player’s prime age. He won the 2022 WC Golden Boot and was the top European league goalscorer in the 2024/25  season. France will be looking to better their runners-up spot last year and should go deep. He only scored 5 in qualifying however, so signs are he may be slowing down.

    France, allbets
  • Harry Kane

    • Nation: England
    • Caps / Goals: 112,78
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: 2 Finals, 11 games, 8 goals
    • Group Games: Ghana, Panama, Croatia

Another previous golden boot winner (in 2018), and also heading into his 3rd World Cup Finals. The Englishman has broken scoring records wherever he has been and also has a Euros Golden boot to his name as well. He is 32 now and perhaps a little slower but he has scored 6 in qualifying for this WC. He also faces Panama in the Group, a team he scored 3 against last time England played them at a Finals.

  • Vinicius Júnior

    • Nation: Brazil
    • Caps / Goals: 45,8
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: 1 Tournament, 5 games, 1 goal
    • Group Games: Morocco, Haiti, Scotland

Vinicius Júnior is Brazil’s current poster boy and the Real Madrid winger is their best hope of goals this summer. The group stage should see a chance to hit a few, though Scottish and Moroccan defences are pretty solid. He has a traditional style of Brazilian attacking flair football and is a joy to watch. He only scored twice in WC Qualification however, so could represent a bit of a long shot in this one.

    Brazil, allbets
  • Lamine Yamal

    • Nation: Spain
    • Caps / Goals: 23,6
    • Previous World Cup Tournament games/goals: Debut
    • Group Games: Uruguay, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia

The exciting 18-year-old makes his debut at a World Cup and is playing for Spain, many people’s favourites to go all the way. He certainly has the pace and finishing ability to make a name for himself with potentially two very easy group games to fill his boots in. He has been to a major tournament before (the 2024 Euros) and will be looking to make a mark in the bigger one this summer.

My Prediction for the Golden Boot Winner

So now we move onto the full Golden Boot prediction. Let’s think about some Golden Boot betting tips as well first though. It’s not always about the best long term players for this market. Players who score a hatful against poor opposition in the Group stage can also rank highly, like Oleg Salenko with 6 goals in 1990 and Miroslav Klose with 5 in 2002. Having said that you ideally want someone facing weak early group teams and in a team that will go deep into the tournament. Always try and pick the team’s penalty taker as well!
