The history of Esports

History of Sport, Allbets.tvHistory of Sport, Allbets.tv

Playing “video games” (as they were known) competitively can be traced right back to the 1970s, where both Stamford University in America and the Sega company in Japan lay claim to being the first to run an Esports contest. It was the Space Invaders Championship held by Atari in 1980 that attracted more than 10,000 participants which really made competitive gaming as a mainstream hobby. The sports development grew exponentially with the advent of the internet when multiplayer gaming became something everyone could do from their own home. Some countries define Esports as an official sport but others view it as a competition, and this reflective of the massive difference in popularity between nations around the world.

The Olympic organisers have considered adding Esports as an event but have been troubled by the association with violence that the majority of the main games possess. Regardless things are moving forward and in February 2022, the Commonwealth Games Federation announced that Esports would be included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, initially as a pilot event but with the possibility of it being a medal event in the 2026 Games.

How we Evaluate and Rank Esports Betting Sites

When we are analysing a betting site to write a review we have many different things to think about. Everyone is different and will be looking for different things from their online bookmaker, and certain features that for one player may be essential for someone else are irrelevant. It becomes the case that there is no one size fits all “best” site. Everyone will have a different preference so our reviews aim to give an overall feel of the site and report back on the key points, ultimately allowing the final choice to be made by each individual. The things that we think are important and that everyone will value to some are:

  • The size of the Welcome Bonus
  • Whether there are existing user promotions bonuses
  • The value of the odds
  • The number of betting markets
  • Is there In-play betting and live-streaming
  • Can you download a betting App
  • What payment methods can you use and how quickly are you paid
  • Is there good customer support if you have a problem

How to bet on Esports

Esport betting is no different from other sports, the process that you must go through is exactly the same from start to finish. Just follow these steps:

  1. Pick an Esports site that you like the look of and is suitable for you, we have listed our favourites above.
  2. Join the site filling in all your personal information accurately.
  3. Make your first deposit with whatever method is convenient but check it qualifies for the Welcome bonus if that is something you want to claim.
  4. Head to the Esports section which will be listed on the left hand side of the homepage. Sometimes you will be able to head straight to the relevant game that you are interested in.
  5. Once you are at your desired Esport discipline you can see the individual matches that are available to bet on.
  6. Once you see the one you want you can either directly click on the relevant match odds (which team will win) or you can click next to it and reveal all the different betting options.
  7. Once you have clicked on the odds next to your selection it will be added to your betslip. Enter the amount that you want to bet and confirm it.

What payment methods can I use to bet on Esports?

Esports bookmakers are for the most part regular online betting sites that offer these sports to bet on and so they use the same payment methods that are standard. The exact methods that each site accepts will vary but they will all be very similar. There are four main categories of payment method that you can expect to find and the details of these are:

  • Traditional Bank Cards - Visa and Mastercard (Occasionally American Express)
  • Prepaid Cards - PaySafeCard
  • E-Wallets - PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, Google Pay, Apple Pay
  • Crypto Currencies - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, XRP, DOGE

Esports Bonuses and Promotions

bonuses and promotionsBonuses and Promotions for Sports betting, Allbets.tv

We have come across Esports specific bonuses in the past but these are not common. What you will find instead is that there are generic bonuses offered by betting sites and Esports are one of the bet types that can be used in conjunction with these.

What are the best Esports Welcome Offers?

Online gambling Welcome Offers, also known as Sign Up Bonuses, and New User Bonuses, are abundant and it is rare to find a betting site that does not offer one. There are several different types of reward that may be offered, and each will have specific terms and conditions. The main types that you can expect to find are:

  • No Deposit Bonuses - They are hard to find but they do exist, no deposit bonuses as the name suggests offer new players either bonus funds or Free bets to use immediately after opening an account, before even depositing. They do this to let you get a feel for their site for real and try it out, hoping that you like it and since you have done 90% of the leg work in setting up an account, they will be able to entice you into depositing later on. Whether you choose to do that or not is up to you, but either way a “No Deposit” bonus is a good way to try out any bookmaker because you really can not lose.
  • Deposit Bonuses - A more common Welcome bonus is a deposit bonus where your initial deposit is matched by bonus funds. There are two types, either the bonus funds will be awarded for you to use straight away, or they will be on hold and given to you once you have wagered your initial deposit a certain amount. In both scenarios there will be T&C’s outlining exactly how much you must wager, on what sports and what bet types and crucially at what odds. Only when you have fully met the T&C’s will you be able to make a withdrawal from your account and keep the bonus funds.
  • Free Bets - Often you will see Free bets on offer, and these differ slightly from bonus funds. Free bets can be placed once, and if the bet wins then you get back the winnings only, not the stake amount. Free bets do not usually have any wagering requirements to them you are simply told the odds range required to qualify for and then to use the Free bet.
  • Refunded losses - Sometimes marketed as risk-free betting, depending on the terms and conditions of the refund, these are good welcome offers that allow you to test out a site with limited risk. If you bet as you would do normally and win then that is that. Should you in fact make a loss then this offer will refund some, and in some cases all, of your losses. Sometimes you will get cash and sometimes a Free bet, but either is better than nothing.
  • Profit Boost - To encourage new users to deposit and to drum up interest in certain sports you will sometimes see price boosts, offering incredibly generous odds on one selection which is likely to be a popular one. The odds are often well above the general market rate but to limit their liability the bookmakers will limit your max stake amount on this bet.

What are the best Esports existing user bonuses?

There have been some Esports specific bonuses in the past and there will be again in the future but what you are more likely to find is general bonuses which are compatible with Esports bets. The most common types for you to come across are:

  • Reload bonuses - These are a form of deposit bonus and will range from depositing a certain amount and being given a matched amount as bonus funds to requesting you deposit and wager a set amount and you then receive a Free bet. In both instances these bonuses are there to encourage you to redeposit into your account and make you an active customer once again.
  • Acca Boosts - These are a common form of bonus that you will see many betting sites offering to their existing customers. They are designed to encourage more and more legs to be added to an Acca, and the more legs that are the greater the bonus that is given. These can actually be very good value depending on what the minimum odds required for a bet to contribute are. Each bookmaker is likely to have their own scale but they are usually in the area of 3+ legs being boosted 5% up to 15+ legs being boosted by anything up to 100%.

Are there any Esports betting Apps?

Sports Betting Apps, Allbets.tvSports Betting Apps, Allbets.tv

In today's gambling market nearly all betting sites will offer some form of mobile platform. Some have official Apps that can be downloaded from both the iOS and Android stores, and others you download an APK directly from their website and install that way. Using an App is universally agreed upon to be a better betting experience than just simply visiting the desktop site using your mobile browser.

We have not come across any specific Esports betting Apps but every site we have ever reviewed that accepted Esports bets, also accepted those bets on their App, so you have nothing to worry about there.

Esports Betting Strategies

  • Do not rush into things. Take your time to fully familiarise yourself with the nuances of Esports betting. Make sure you understand the rules of each game and how what is happening can affect the In-play odds. Bet with small stakes initially until you are comfortable with things, and then move on to your normal stake amounts.
  • Do your research. As much as possible look into the current form of the players and the team, looking for any trends or patterns. Compare these to the opposing teams looking for anything significant. It is highly likely that the players will have a social media presence and keeping track of these profiles may also give you valuable insights.
  • Bet on value. So what is “value”? Well in betting terms value is when you are getting a potential payout from a bet which is greater than the chances of that bet winning. It is not, and actually has very little to do with, bets that are likely to win. It is solely the ratio between the probability of a bet winning and the amount of profit that you make should that happen. When you can predict with a degree of accuracy what the chances are of an Esports team winning then you will be able to back them when the odds are above that probability, and not back them when the odds are below, regardless of if you think they will win the match. This is how (and is the only way) you will make a long run profit whilst gambling.

Pros and Cons of betting on Esports

Pluses
  • Almost all games are live streamed
  • Exciting new up and coming sport
  • Opportunity to become a specialist
Minuses
  • Bet limits are relatively low
  • Generally higher margins than other sports.

FAQ. Frequently Asked Questions
  • Any video game that you can play against another player counts as an Esport. The most popular when it comes to betting on them are CS:GO, League of Legends, and Dota 2.

  • This is a VERY good question, and whilst we would like to say no there are far fewer protections and regulations than more established sports such as football. We have no knowledge of “match fixing” taking place, but there has been instances of players using various means to “cheat”.

  • This is a question that does not really have an answer, it will depend on a lot of variables and there will be a different answer depending on what bookmaker you are using, and what game you are betting on. For most people though the winnings are how much you bet multiplied by the odds, and it is how much you bet that will determine your winnings.

  • Bonuses and Promotions offered by the betting sites are always changing, and there is never really one “best”, because it depends on how much you want to deposit and also the types of bet you want to place. We have listed our top bookmakers on this page and suggest you look at what bonuses they have to offer.
