What does 0.0 Asian Handicap Mean?

Traditionally an Asian Handicap bet exists to give one team either a headstart or an amount that they need to make up in order to level the odds and make either outcome just as likely as the other. The fact that one team starts behind is why the bet has the name of a “handicap” bet. Quite why these handicap bets became known as “Asian” handicaps is not exactly clear and there are a few possibilities. The most common sense answer is that it is probably because it used to be mainly Asian bookmakers who would offer this bet (and other areas of the world did not).
An Asian Handicap of +0 / -0 is a little different to most other Asian Handicap bets. The handicap does not actually give either team any advantage or disadvantage. Instead what happens is that is the game ends in a draw, then the bet will have the stake amount returned. This is the same as the more common “Draw No Bet” option found at European bookmakers.
Asian handicap +/- 0 Examples
When an Asian Handicap includes the 0 this represents what happens if the game ends as a draw, and in this case you neither win nor lose but get your stake amount returned to you.
- If your team wins by 1 or more goals, then the bet will win.
- If your team loses by 1 or more goals, then the bet will lose.
- If the game ends in a draw, then you neither win nor lose, the bet is a “push”, and your stakes are returned.
Handicap | Match result | Bet result |
---|---|---|
+ / -0 | Win by 1+ | Win |
Lose by 1+ | Lose | |
Any Draw | Push (Stake returned) |
Asian handicap +/- 0 Examples
To clearly show how this works we will look at a real example*.
To be using the 0 bet market is is likely that there is no clear favourite. We are going to look at a UK Premier League game between West Ham and Nottingham Forest. There is a slight bias towards Nottingham Forest winning with odds on them being 2.7, the Draw at 3.4, and West Ham at 2.9. When we look at the 0 Asian Handicap market then the odds that are available are:
- West Ham -0 @ 2.05
- Nottingham Forest +0 @ 1.92
So if we place a bet of 10 on each, let us look at what each bet returns for each applicable score:
Match Result | West Ham 0 bet | Nottingham Forest 0 bet |
---|---|---|
West Ham wins by 1+ | -10.5 | -10 |
Draw | -0 | +0 |
Nottingham Forest win by 1+ | -10 | +9.2 |

Where can I place Asian Handicap +/- 0 bets?
Most betting sites out there will allow you to place Asian Handicap bets (not just the ones based in Asia). The following betting sites are the ones that have Asian Handicap bets as well as great odds and lots of bonuses. In the table below we list odds and the margin that they were offering on the Premier League game between West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
Asian handicap betting conclusion
Asian Handicap bets usually give one team an advantage but this is not the case here, so the 0 handicap is unique. Getting some of your stake back does happen with other Asian Handicaps but this is the only one where the full amount is returned.
This Asian handicap bet is useful when you think one team is better than the other, and you are sure they will not be beaten, but you do not want to risk losing money if there is a draw. You will get lower odds betting on the 0 handicap compared to the match odds, but you will not lose your stake as often meaning it is a lower risk bet.

When there is a spread of zero this means that neither team has an advantage, if your team wins then you win and if they lose then your bet loses. The difference with a 0 spread is that if there is a draw your stake is returned.
-
Yes, and Asian Handicap of 0 is the same as betting on Draw No Bet.
-
A -0.5 handicap is exactly the same as betting on a team to win using regular match odds. Betting on a +0.5 handicap means that you are betting on either that team to win or for the game to end in a draw.
