A few weeks ago, it looked like Lando Norris would have the Formula 1 Championship wrapped up by now. However he was, along with his McClaren teammate Oscar Piastri, disqualified post-race in Las Vegas which allowed Max Verstappen back in with a realistic shout of winning his fifth consecutive F1 title.

Verstappen further staked his claim winning in Qatar, with Norris failing to reach the Podium at all. Norris is still the favourite to win his first Championship, but really there shouldn’t have been even the slightest chance that Verstappen would come back into it.

Deep breath…let’s look at the permutations of Sunday’s final day in the F1 2025 calendar. There are 25 points awarded to the Winner, with 18 given to second place and 15 for third. Norris is 12 points ahead of Verstappen, and 16 ahead of Piastri.

If Norris wins on the Yas Marina Circuit, he wins the Championship. If Norris finishes in the top 3 positions in Abu Dhabi, he wins the Championship.

However, if Norris finishes fourth, he would need Verstappen to fail to win the race. In fact, if Norris finishes between fourth and seventh place, he’d win the title as long as Verstappen or Piastri don’t win at Yas Marina.

For Verstappen to win his fifth title, he will need to win the race and hope Norris finishes fourth or lower. If Max Verstappen finishes second or third, Norris will have to finish eighth or ninth in order for the Red Bull driver to pick up the title. To be clear, Verstappen needs to finish on the Podium to stand any chance of winning the Championship.

Oscar Piastri’s chances of winning the title are rather slim. For Piastri to be successful, he would need to win at Abu Dhabi and hope his teammate doesn’t finish higher than sixth. Or, he could finish second and hope Norris finishes in tenth or lower, and Verstappen finishes fourth or lower.

Note that if for any reason Lando Norris is tied with either Verstappen or Piastri (or both), Norris would win the title based on his seven race wins and his eight second place finishes.

Phew! Realistically, Norris should win the title. However, this is Formula 1 and we’ve had shocks and surprises before. Anything can happen on the final day, making an accurate Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction difficult (but, of course, not impossible!).

Who are the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix drivers to watch out for?

All eyes will be on Norris, Verstappen and Piastri on Sunday. For our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction, we’ve analysed the top three drivers of achieving victory at Yas Marina.

Lando Norris

  • Ranking: 1st
  • 2025 Record: 7 Wins 8 Podiums

While Norris will be thinking he, and his team, should’ve had the title in the bag already, he still is a fair way in front of his nearest rival Max Verstappen for the F1 2025 title. Lando Norris knows that a Podium finish will be enough to win the Championship, regardless of what his rivals manage in this race. For our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction, we’ve examined Norris’ record on this circuit as well as how McClaren’s number one might react to the pressure of being favourite for the title.

Max Verstappen

  • Ranking: 2nd
  • 2025 Record: 7 Wins 6 Podiums

The four-times Champ knows that he must win at Abu Dhabi to stand any realistic chance of picking up yet another F1 title. We’ve looked at Verstappen’s recent record at Yas Marina for our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction. Red Bull’s number one driver has a great record in Abu Dhabi, winning four consecutive races before Norris stopped that run last season.

Oscar Piastri

  • Ranking: 3rd
  • 2025 Record: 7 Wins 4 Podiums

Piastri was the favourite to win the 2025 Formula 1 Championship at one stage during the season, but there’s a lot that has to happen, or not happen as the case may be, for the McClaren man to win the title this year. A Podium finish is likely for Oscar Piastri, but for our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction, a race win seems like a step too far.

Prediction for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

It’s going to be a hugely entertaining and thrilling race as the season draws to a close. With so many permutations for the last race of this F1 season, it might be difficult to assess who will come out on top. It certainly will be close between Norris and Verstappen, with the latter winning four in a row at Yas Marina until Norris ended that run last season.

For our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix prediction we’ve gone for Max Verstappen to win. Now, we still think Lando Norris will finish on the podium and therefore win the title, but Verstappen’s record at Yas Marina is excellent, with four consecutive wins until Norris ended that run last season.

Prediction 1: Verstappen will win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Prediction 2: Norris will win his first Formula 1 Championship!
