AEK have the advantage of playing at home and enter the match as favourites, but LASK’s excellent form and impressive attacking efficiency suggest an open game with a strong chance of both teams finding the net.

Returning to the Champions League after several seasons away, AEK and LASK will face each other for the first time in the opening round of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

The Greek champions secured their place in the Champions League through the qualifying rounds, and they were particularly convincing in the final round against Levski, whom they defeated 4-0 on aggregate. AEK have carried that excellent form into the start of the new domestic season as well. Ahead of their clash with LASK, they recorded a convincing 5-0 victory over Aris, with Varga scoring twice, while Marin, Koita and Zini also got on the scoresheet.

LASK, meanwhile, booked their place among Europe’s elite after an incredible comeback against Celtic in the final qualifying round. The Austrian side appeared to be practically out of the competition after a 3-0 defeat in Glasgow, but they produced a spectacular turnaround in the second leg to secure a memorable victory in front of their home fans. They have carried that momentum into the domestic league, where they sit top of the Austrian Bundesliga after five rounds with a perfect 15 points.

With both teams heading into this clash in excellent form, an entertaining match with plenty of attacking football is expected. Thanks to home advantage and a slightly stronger squad on paper, AEK are the favourites, but LASK should by no means be underestimated.

The Austrians have shown tremendous character and quality in their recent matches, while their attacking performances have been particularly impressive. They have scored no fewer than 17 goals in their last four matches across all competitions.

Based on everything both teams have shown at the start of the season, I expect LASK to be highly competitive in Athens and believe this match has a strong chance of producing goals at both ends.
