Fiorentina used to be a major name in European competition but are not the force they once were. They head into this final group game in 11th place outside the elusive top 8 spots, which saves them extra games in a Last 16 playoff round. Lausanne are a relatively new name to me, but the Swiss league is of average strength nowadays so they should not be pushovers. They are currently 16th, a bad run of results elsewhere could see them drop out of the top 24 and end their European adventure. That’s unlikely and with their goal difference they should make it even with a loss on Thursday. They could equally squeeze into the top 8 with a win, though this seems an unlikely scenario.

Fiorentina have not really had any easy matches in their 6 group games, and could argue they haven’t had the cushion of a game against some of the whipping boys, (Although Rapid Wien who they beat 3-0 are certainly not the same team that once dominated Europe in the 1920s!). Other than that they have played AEK Athens, Dynamo Kiev, Sigma Olomouc and the tough German outfit Mainz 05.

Lausanne on the other hand, have a beat Icelanders and Maltese, drew with Cypriots and Fins and lost away to Polish outfit Lech Poznan (Of Man City fan fame!). This doesn’t bode well for them as they face Italian opposition who will want to make sure they progress and don’t have far to travel to Switzerland. I’m going with common sense here and saying Fiorentina see off their sporty rivals. I think a typical 1 or 2 nil win to the Italians will be the outcome here, but I’m only prepared to go for a Fiorentina win and I like the 1.95 odds I’ve found online for that outcome, believing it represents value.
