⭐ Most AL MVP’s WonBarry Bonds (USA) – 7 Awards

At the end of the 1931 MLB Season, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) awarded one player from both the American and National League with an award for being the most valuable player to their respective team. This became an annual tradition and it’s now one of the most sought after awards to add to a player’s home trophy shelf.

The majority of winners down the years have been batsmen, with 1st batsmen (somewhat obviously) dominating that statistic. Outfielders have also picked up quite a few alongside pitchers. Barry Bonds with his big homerun hitting power dominated this award, winning 7(!) in the early 2000’s. 21 individual winners have come from the St. Louis Cardinals.

What is the Format?

The National League Most Valuable Player is chosen following a vote of the BBWAA at the conclusion of the regular season. Votes are made before the playoffs start. A ranked choice system is used. Players gain points for their places (1st, 2nd, 3rd), with the one holding the highest total taking the prize.

There are set criteria which includes offensive/defensive value, games played, and character. Each writer can weigh these differently and make their own player picks.

The final results are announced after the World Series is completed.

Who are the MLB World Series players to watch out for?

Let’s look at some of the biggest contenders who will be looking to show they are Baseball’s ultimate player in 2026.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto

    • Position : Pitcher
    • Team : LA Dodgers
    • Nationality : Japanese
    • Last Season Awards : World Series MVP, All Star Team, All Star MLB First Team
    • Odds: +18100

A brilliant World Series performance earned him the 2026 World Series MVP. Can he win the  2026 National League MVP in the regular season? The Japanese pitcher is only 27 and at the top of his game, so he will have a chance. He will need to show better consistency to do this, but he has proved himself in the big playoff matches so is definitely one to watch this season.

  • Paul Skenes

    • Position : Starting Pitcher
    • Team:  Pittsburgh Pirates
    • Nationality :  American
    • Last Season Awards : NL Cy Young Award, All-MLB First Team, LB ERA leader
    • Odds: +4000

It’s 11 years since a starting pitcher won the NL MVP, but why not Skenes to break that run in the 2026 National League MVP? He’s a player who improves as the season goes on historically and with 55 career starts he is still under 2.00! He needs to show more consistency though, and help see Pittsburgh at least to the Playoffs, to stand a real chance.

  • Shohei Ohtani

    • Position: Hitter / Pitcher
    • Team : Los Angeles Dodgers
    • Nationality : Japanese
    • Last Season Awards : NL MVP, Silver Sugger, All Star, MLB First Team, NL Hank Aaron Award
    • Odds: +100

The winner of the National League MVP two times in a row and 4 awards in all. He hasn’t managed to win the World Series MVP award as yet, though, but the Dodgers are more than likely to be back at that stage this year to give him another chance. He excels in pitching and hitting. He is one of the major stars of MLB and World Baseball and is loved across Japan. On his day, he is unbeatable and he was instrumental in the Dodgers World Series win in 2025. Do that again and he should win the 2026 National League MVP.

  • Elly De La Cruz

    • Position : Shortstop
    • Team : Cincinnati Reds
    • Nationality: Dominican
    • Last Season Awards : All Star NL Team
    • Odds: +2000

Eily De Cruz has all the attributes needed to make him one of the greatest home run hitters of all time. His physical stature and power off the bat can be brutal. Currently, he hasn’t quite got everything quite lined up though. When he does add consistency and timing to his game he is going to be even more of a force in the MLB. Why not gamble on that happening in time for the 2026 National League MVP awards?

  • Juan Soto

    • Position: Right Fielder
    • Team: New York Mets
    • Nationality: Dominican
    • Last Season Awards: All-MLB First Team, Silver Slugger, NL Stolen Base Leader
    • Odds: +900

If not the MLB National League MVP 2026 then when? Still only 27, Juan Soto is one of the best known MLB players and is well on his way to a hall of fame career. He missed out to Judge in the American League voting  in 2024 and Ohtani in 2025. He has finished in the top 10 six times without winning and must be wondering what he has to do to get this award. He is still 27, so he has time on his side.

Where to watch the 2026 MLB World Series

There is plenty of choice for those looking to find a 2026 MLB World Series live stream. The MLB has made several TV and live streaming deals for the new season. This includes  Peacock, ESPN, NBC and the subscription streaming service Netflix. The Peacock-exclusive MLB games are to be shown on the newly created BCSN sports cable network.

There are many other ways to follow matches and plenty of radio coverage deals too. Dedicated fans should be able to find all the live action but you may have to use a few different services to be able to see each and every game.

Text commentary is provided via the main MLB site. Some bookmakers also offer live streaming options for users. Always check the terms and conditions to see what you need to do to access live streams on these sites as operators’ rules vary wildly.

Prediction for the 2026 MLB National League MVP

It’s a little bit outfield but I think Juan Soto might finally do enough to claim the NL MVP this season. His consistent performances week in week out for the Mets deserve more recognition and some writers might just place him above Ohtani. Will he do a Soto shuffle at awards night? That image alone seems enough to want him to win it! Besides, there is no real odds value to backing Ohtani again.
