This is the 112th edition of the race, and it will be starting in Lille on July 5th. By the time the riders reach the finish in Paris on July 27th, they will have contested 21 stages, the longest being 212km, and covered a total race distance of 3,320 Kilometres.

Nineteen of the stages are classed as road stages and determined to be flat, hilly, or mountainous. They pass through mountain ranges such as the Jura, Massif Central, Pyrenees, and Alps. The other two stages are time trials; these are much shorter, at only 11 km and 33km. This year, there will be 23 teams of 8 riders, one more than in 2024.

The race winner will be the rider with the lowest cumulative time over the three weeks. This is known as the general classification and yellow jersey winner. The 2024 winner, Tadej Pogacar, completed the race in 83 hours, 38 minutes, and 56 seconds.

As well as this, there are three other individual awards

• The White jersey follows the same rules as the yellow jersey, but can only be contested by riders under 26 years of age.
• The Polka-dot “King of the Mountains” jersey, held by whoever has gained the most points by reaching various summits along the tour in the lead positions.
• The Green sprint jersey, which is also based on points, this time gained through being in the lead places at certain delegated “sprint” sections of the tour.

There are also awards that can be fought for that do not result in a jersey. There is also the team classification, which is based on the general classification times of the top three riders on each team. Finally the most combative cyclist of each stage is decided by a jury of eight specialists in cycling. Since 2023 this rider will be given a golden number to be worn on the following day's stage.

Tour de France Femmes 2025 Overview

This is the female equivalent of the men’s event which begins in Brittany where the riders set off on a different route around France. Women’s road racing is going from strength to strength and has grown from being just a single stage before the men's tour began into its own official tour. Beginning in 2022 it has grown to now include 15 professional female teams who will compete in 9 races over 10 days.

The basic structure is a replica of the male Tour de France and contains 5 relatively flat stages followed by 4 much more mountainous days. The female riders do not get a final day ride around Paris because they finish in the middle of the Alps at the Alpine ski resort of Les Portes des Soleil.

Demi Vollering is the heavy favourite to be the overall winner. Other riders who are expected to challenge for the overall win are Marlen Reusser, Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Ann Van Der Breggen. You can expect Cédrine Kerbaol, the big French hopeful, to receive widespread support from the locals as she looks to improve on last years 6th place finish.

History of Tour de France

First held in 1903, the Tour de France was established by Henri Desgrange, a French journalist and cyclist. His newspaper sponsored the event from the start to boost circulation.

The race has been run every year except during the two World Wars. In 1919, the Yellow Jersey was introduced and worn by the person currently leading the event. The colour yellow was chosen as it was the colour the L’Auto newspaper was printed on.

In its early years, the teams were sponsored mainly by bicycle manufacturers, although in 1930, national and regional teams took over. However, in 1962 Trade teams returned, and it has remained that way since, with the exception of 1967 and 1968 when national teams were featured. Although only one rider can win, they rely heavily on support from their team in order to succeed.

The event has had serious problems with doping scandals in the recent past, the most famous case being seven-time winner Lance Armstrong (1999-2005) being stripped of all his titles in 2012. An investigation revealed he had been the central figure in a doping conspiracy over a large part of his career.
