This summer will see the inaugural edition of the FIFA Club World Cup held in its brand new format. It has been moved from its previous annual December slot in the football season. With 32 of the best teams from around the globe drawn into a group and knockout format, this represents a new era for world club football and is building a lot of excitement worldwide. The World Club Cup is being held in a non-International Football World Cup year and also a blank year from any other major international federation competitions. This means it can stand alone as a 4 yearly football festival of the best that club football can offer. The new plans are certainly ambitious and the biggest thing to happen to club football since FIFA’s inception in 1904.

In this article, we will review the tournament from a footballing and betting perspective. This will give you a full flavour of what to expect and also a run down of where to bet. Along with some handy tips for what to look out for, and promotions that might be running. This should leave you fully prepared for the tournament kick-off on June 14th.

World Club Competition - A Brief History

Whilst clubs had always played international football tours, competitive competition between club sides was rare in the early 1900s. Yet as football rapidly became a global sport, international football between national sides became more and more popular from the 1920s onwards. The International World Cup’s birth in 1930 came from this growing popularity. This tournament led to more worldwide interest in which country had the best footballers. World War 2 sadly slowed down the pace of this growth. However, once the war was over, interest was still high, and this led to the creation of national federation international competitions like the Euros.

Club football lagged behind initially, but in the 50’s and 60s more and more club competitions sprang up. The biggest ones were from the two main federations, UEFA and CONMEBOL, which we know as the European Cup (Champions League) and Copa Libertadores. Initially, the idea of a World Club Cup was a two-legged match, which became a one-off match played between the champions of these two standout competitions to declare the Club World Champions. However, over time, the gained strength of other federations meant they were added to the competition. This became a small annual tournament between the Champions League winners of Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, North and South America. In 2020, new plans were announced by FIFA to enable this to grow into a larger worldwide football festival. This has led to the competition we will see this year.

In many ways, this represents the biggest change in club football since those early days in the 1960’s so no wonder everyone is excited to see this new competition!

Tournament Overview

The new Tournament is set up in the same format as the World Cup, with a group then a knockout stage. It will see 32 teams drawn from across all 6 continents- qualifying based on winning their local version of the Champions League in the last four years. This can also be via their current local federation ranking. The host country also gets a spot, and this will be the season’s local winner of the national competition. In this edition, Inter Miami qualified and will represent the host country, the USA. (Obviously featuring Lionel Messi!)

Of the total representatives, there are twelve from Europe (UEFA), six from South America (CONMEBOL), five from North America (CONCACAF), four from Asia (AFC), four from Africa (CAF) and one from Oceania (OFC). This pretty much covers all the best teams from the last four years of club football; those that have been missed out might complain, but the selection process seems well thought out.

The tournament kick-off is on June 14th, with eight groups of four. This will see fourteen days of frantic group match action. The next stage will see the top two in each group contest the last sixteen as the knockout section starts. Knockout games begin on the 28th June. The Quarter Finals will start on the 4th July, the Semis on the 8th and the grand final will be held on the 13th July.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Predictions & Favourites

In terms of predicting the overall tournament winners, the easy thing to do is to look at the European and South American teams. The European heavyweights such as Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Juventus, Man City, PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea are the leaders in the current odds market. All these teams have big squads and will take the tournament seriously.

We are sure that this tournament will have a few twists and turns. The heat for one will be a factor. This will help the sides used to playing in hotter climates. Of these, the best known Brazilian and Argentine sides are Flamengo, Fluminense, Palmeiras, River Plate and Boca Juniors. All the listed teams have great history in the original club cup form, and South American clubs and fans have always placed more importance on the World Club trophy than European sides. This means you can expect them to be fighting hard in every game.

Outside of these, Al Ain are the current Asian Champions League winners, so they should be strong, especially with the recent improvements in the Saudi league. The Egyptian side Al Ahly have three consecutive CAF Champions League titles under their belt; they can rightfully claim to be the best African team and will be a tough prospect for anyone. The Mexican, South African and Japanese sides will be strong and hard to beat. The American teams are on home soil, and the romantics would love to see a Lionel Messi swansong with his current Inter Miami team.

Other teams will not want to be there just to make up the numbers. Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, RB Salzburg, and Benfica are all capable of upsetting the big boys as they have done before in the Champions League. There are also a few sides that are not so well known globally. These are the representatives from New Zealand, Tunisia and South Korea and South Africa. These teams will relish the opportunity to make a splash on the world stage and try and get through their groups, and in a knockout match, anything can happen!

Betting Strategies and Tips

The World Club Cup will be full of markets to bet on, from match results, group stage finishing positions, up to who will win the tournament overall. Our best advice is to follow form and statistics whenever you are making a wager. In this tournament, it is worth looking at the less well-known teams in matchups to try and see who might spring an upset. You can look at handicap markets for this, where odds can be more favourable. Giving a team a head start or handicap can be the best option for the best odds.

Monitoring injuries and suspensions is important in a short-form tournament where a star player's absence in a match will make a bigger impact for a club than it might in a longer league campaign. If you are betting on markets like how many corners or yellow cards, it is worth studying previous matches for statistical data so you have figures to work with. Keep an eye on the final group games, where teams may have already qualified, been eliminated or need a result to stay in the competition. This will affect both the mindset of a team and which starting eleven the manager selects for the match and can lead to some surprising results!

What Payment Methods Can I Use to Bet on the FIFA Club World Cup 2025?

Depending on where you bet and what sites you use, different deposit and withdrawal methods will be available. If you are setting up a new account online, it is important to find a website with payment types that suit you. Listed below are some of the most common ones that you can use;

  • Bank Transfers
  • Credit/Debit Cards, i.e. Mastercard, Visa
  • Cryptocurrency, i.e Bitcoin, Tether, Ethereum

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Bonuses and Promotions

As worldwide betting on the FIFA Club World Cup should be in the billions of dollars mark, all bookmakers will want as many punters as they can to spend money at their sites. This is good news for bettors as it means that bookmakers will look to make their offering on the tournament as attractive as possible and will run numerous bonuses and offers both before and during the tournament to stand out in a competitive market.

Below is a list of various types of offers to watch out for

  • Odds Boosts - This could be on tournament winners or tournament club progression, or any market in a selected single match. An odds boost is a good way to get better odds on your wager
  • Free Bets - Usually offered on the tournament winner or a match result, and will often be your money-back in the form of free bets if your bet loses.
  • Bet Insurance - Insurance bet offers are usually on accumulators that miss by one, or against injury time goals or means of elimination, i.e penalties.
  • Free Spins - Free spins on certain casino games, sometimes ones linked to the type of tournament. Usually offered as part of a welcome offer.
  • Bet Refund - A simple cash refund of your stake if your bet loses, not tied to free bets.
  • Loyalty Rewards - You might qualify for loyalty rewards by betting over a set amount of money on the tournament. Likewise, certain qualifying bets will earn rewards during the tournament. This is another way bookies will hope to keep you using their website, as it encourages you to keep using them for the duration of the competition.

Pros and Cons of Betting on the FIFA Club World Cup 2025

There are both advantages and disadvantages to betting on such a new tournament. In a way, some advantages are also disadvantages depending on how you look at it! For example, there are limited previous matches between the clubs to look at historically, but this could mean bookmakers may underestimate the odds on certain teams. It will be worth searching around for the best odds on matches and doing as much research as possible. The wide coverage of the cup means you should be able to watch the matches when they are ongoing, whether streaming on your website of choice or on local national TV coverage. As there will be so many websites with offers on it is worth having a few accounts and shopping around for the best deals and offers online.

Pluses
  • Plenty of Offers available
