Belgium will look to put up another strong fight, but France, with an almost full-strength roster and significantly greater individual quality, appear well-positioned to justify their status as favorites.

A neighboring rivalry headlines the fifth round of Group G in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
Belgium have already been eliminated from qualification after losing all four of their opening games. However, the results do not fully reflect their performances, as they came close to causing an upset on several occasions. Their narrow home defeat to Hungary stands out, as does the impressive resistance they showed away against Finland. This is a national team that could become far more competitive once all of their available players are regularly included in the squad. For now, though, that has not been the case, and it remains to be seen whether the situation will improve in the future.
France, on the other hand, have little room for error. Due to the competition format, in which points are carried over to the next stage, every game is extremely important. That is why, apart from Victor Wembanyama and Evan Fournier, they have called up virtually every top player currently available. Having already suffered an unexpected defeat to Finland, they will be determined not to repeat that mistake in the closing stages of the group phase.
Belgium have long been recognized as a disciplined, defensively solid team that prefers to slow the pace of the game and keep the scoring low. Tonight, however, they face an opponent that is arguably even stronger defensively while possessing vastly superior offensive talent. Rudy Gobert will be a dominant presence in the paint, while the offensive responsibility will primarily fall on players such as Elie Okobo, Nadir Hifi, and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot. Belgium are likely to spend the entire game under heavy pressure against a far more talented French side.
