Brazil Serie A: Fluminense vs Coritiba 09/10/2026
Fluminense could be in for a calmer match with fewer cards, given their control of the game and the numerous absences on both sides.
Betting on Cards
The Maracanã is unlikely to witness a war on Thursday evening, but rather a game of chess in which every move is carefully measured, at least according to the available numbers.
Fluminense return from the international break with several important absences. Canobbio and Nonato are suspended due to yellow-card accumulation, while Cano, John Kennedy, Renê and Alisson are all sidelined with injuries. The visitors will also be without several players, with Coritiba missing Keno, Lavega and Ronier.
With several players who bring aggression and intensity in transition unavailable, I expect a match in which greater emphasis will be placed on controlling possession and space rather than on committing fouls and engaging in physical duels. Fluminense should dictate the tempo at home and have little need to chase the result through tactical fouls, while Coritiba could opt for a deeper defensive block and focus on closing down spaces.
The first meeting between the two sides this season ended 1-1 in Curitiba without any major tensions, while another factor is the lack of a traditional rivalry between the clubs that would naturally raise the intensity of the game.
The appointment of referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima is also worth highlighting. He averages around 5.3–5.4 cards per match, putting the line practically on the borderline. For that reason, this is a realistic option to consider, but certainly not a bet I would describe as a lock.
However, when the favorite controls possession and the underdog mainly defends in a low block rather than pressing high up the pitch, the number of duels, and consequently cards, often remains below average. On top of that, Fluminense already have one eye on their semifinal against Palmeiras, which could make players currently on a booking even more cautious.
