Belgium Cup: Club Brugge vs Lokeren 17/10/2026
The difference in quality, Lokeren’s defensive weaknesses, and Club Brugge’s greater squad depth could prove decisive in helping the hosts score at least two goals in the second half.
Betting on Goals
Saturday evening at the Jan Breydel Stadium brings an intriguing Belgian Cup clash between Club Brugge and Lokeren. The match carries special significance for Brugge head coach Ivan Leko, who ended his playing career at Lokeren. His side head into this encounter in excellent spirits, just days after a spectacular 4-3 victory over Inter Milan in Italy.
Although cup competitions often produce surprises, the gap in quality between these two teams is clear. Brugge are the most successful club in the competition’s history, having lifted the trophy 12 times, and it is difficult to imagine Leko allowing his players to become complacent. Meanwhile, Lokeren sit seventh in the second division with ten points from six matches, with their biggest weakness being their defence.
The visitors have conceded nine goals in their last five matches, with particularly concerning defeats against Francs Borains (3-0) and Genk’s reserve side (4-2). Before their impressive triumph in Milan, Brugge also secured a convincing 4-1 victory over La Louvière, although there were noticeable lapses in concentration during that encounter.
With a demanding schedule and an upcoming Champions League clash against Lens, some squad rotation appears almost inevitable for the hosts. Mechele is dealing with a broken nose, while Siquet and Ordóñez are sidelined through injury. However, these absences primarily affect the defensive line and should not significantly reduce the team’s attacking potential.
The main reason behind this selection is the expectation that Brugge will be particularly dangerous in the second half. As the match progresses, the physical gap between a top-flight side and a second-division opponent should become increasingly evident. After the 60-minute mark, Lokeren could struggle to maintain their intensity, especially if Leko introduces fresh, motivated players eager to prove themselves.
Of course, there is some risk that Brugge could establish a comfortable lead before half-time and decide to conserve energy, as they did against Kortrijk. Nevertheless, my projection puts the hosts at approximately 1.6 expected goals in the second half, translating into roughly a 50% probability of scoring at least twice after the break.
