Žalgiris opened the new EuroLeague season in the right way, with a win in a tough away game against their big rival Crvena zvezda, 83–77. Now, the reigning champions Olympiacos are coming to Kaunas.

The win in Belgrade was the result of excellent team basketball, with coach Mašiulis using all 12 players, and as many as five finishing the game in double digits. However, the victory was overshadowed by NGW’s injury — he strained his hamstring and, according to initial estimates, will be out for the next two weeks. In his absence, experienced German international Maodo Lo will have to take on more responsibility.

Lo didn’t have a major offensive role in that game, but he will now be forced to play a few more minutes than planned. He is known as a player who likes to take responsibility in crucial moments and against top teams, and his scoring contribution will be necessary for a potential win against Olympiacos, especially with one of the home team’s key guards missing.

Saben Lee is also expected to be in the Žalgiris lineup for this game, making his debut for the Lithuanian side. That doesn’t necessarily have to be bad news for Lo. The American is unlikely to have a major offensive role in his first game for the new team, but he could spend some minutes at point guard, allowing the experienced German to rest and conserve energy for his scoring duties.

In their last head-to-head matchup against Olympiacos at the end of February this year, Lo scored 15 points, and this time even part of that output could be enough to meet expectations. Given his increased role and expected minutes, it’s reasonable to believe he will have enough opportunities to be one of the key offensive factors for Žalgiris.
