Anyone who backed Germany against Ecuador did not fare well. In truth, they probably shouldn’t have, as the Germans had effectively secured first place before that match, making Ecuador the real value bet.

Now comes a completely different type of contest. This is the knockout stage and the Round of 32, making its debut in World Cup history.

Germany have, relatively speaking, been handed a more favorable opponent in Paraguay, while a much tougher challenge could await them in the next round. But there will be time to think about that later.

Paraguay showed great resilience against Turkey, winning despite playing with ten men and eliminating one of the tournament’s dark horses. They then drew with Australia to confirm their place in the knockout stage. This is a very disciplined side, and it would be surprising to see them take many risks or commit too many players forward against Germany.

A victory for the favorites should not be in doubt, but I highly doubt this match will produce more than three total goals.
