Hapoel Tel Aviv defeated Real Madrid 76:69 in Botevgrad on Tuesday, cutting the deficit in the quarterfinal series to 2-1.
Unlike the first two games in Madrid, which were much more high-scoring, the third matchup was marked by very poor shooting percentages from both sides. In that kind of game, the home team managed slightly better and created the key difference during the third quarter, which they won 21:10. Hapoel built a double-digit lead at that point and comfortably maintained it until the end.
As has often been the case this season, Elijah Bryant played the most important role in the victory. Even though Hapoel struggled badly from three-point range (4/18), they took full advantage of Edy Tavares’ absence and caused serious damage inside the paint.
Bryant once again showed how intelligent and versatile he is offensively. Instead of forcing outside shots, he made excellent use of the open space in the middle and constantly attacked Real’s weakened interior defense. He finished the game with seven made two-point field goals and 19 total points, despite not attempting a single free throw.
Considering that Real will continue to be weakened without their most important defensive player, it is clear that Hapoel will once again try to attack through aggressive play in the paint. In that scenario, Bryant is expected to have another heavy workload and a major offensive role, with his performance directly impacting Hapoel’s chances of forcing a decisive Game 5.
