Greece Playoffs: Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos 05/06/2026
After a disappointing performance in Game 1, Panathinaikos must respond with far greater intensity in front of their home crowd. To get back into the series, they will need a much bigger contribution from one of their key players, who performed well below his usual standards in the previous matchup.

This is a hugely important game for Panathinaikos. A season that began with the highest ambitions can already be considered disappointing after they failed to secure a place in the EuroLeague Final Four, which was held in their own arena. Missing out on the domestic title as well would undoubtedly be viewed as a major failure.
Game 1 offered little encouragement for the Green supporters. Olympiacos controlled both the pace and the scoreboard for most of the contest and built a maximum lead of 17 points midway through the third quarter. Panathinaikos looked flat, lacking energy and their trademark offensive fluidity, while several key players failed to deliver. This was especially true of Nigel Hayes-Davis, who produced one of his weakest performances of the season, shooting just 1-for-13 from the field.
Even so, Panathinaikos refused to give up. Thanks to the energy and scoring contribution of Dino Mitroglou off the bench, they managed to close the gap and even briefly take the lead late in the game. However, Olympiacos showed greater composure in the decisive moments, regained control, and deservedly secured the opening victory of the series.
Heading into tonight’s matchup, it is clear that the home side needs significantly more from all of its leaders. Cedi Osman and Kendrick Nunn did their part in the first game, but the team lacked the impact expected from a player who is supposed to make the difference in the biggest moments. Hayes-Davis has come under increasing pressure and criticism during the closing stages of the season, but games like this provide the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the character and quality that have made him one of the most respected players in European basketball for years.
I believe that motivation, competitive pride, and the support of the home crowd will bring out the best version of Hayes-Davis tonight. I expect to see a far more aggressive and assertive performance, with a much larger offensive role than he had in the opening game of the series.
