These are the relegation playoff matches for a place in next season’s Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg are naturally the big club in this matchup, the richer and more ambitious side, but also one of the biggest disappointments of the season because of their inconsistency. They finally showed signs of life at the end of the campaign, beating St. Pauli, and now they will look for another victory to gain an advantage before the second leg. They have not won back-to-back matches since December and are without a home win in their last ten games, but they still possess the quality and experience to handle this kind of pressure, something they have successfully done in previous relegation playoff appearances.

Paderborn also finished the season with a win, but their overall performances were not convincing enough to secure direct promotion without the playoffs. They have been effective away from home, although against very different opponents and at a lower competitive level.

Wolfsburg understandably have the upper hand historically in this matchup and I believe they can take a narrow but important win before everything is decided in the second leg.
