Third-place playoff matches are traditionally among the least popular games for national teams, especially when they involve sides that arrived at the tournament as leading contenders for the title.
It remains to be seen what level of motivation France and England will bring after their painful semi-final defeats. France were largely outplayed by Spain and suffered a convincing loss. Didier Deschamps’ side struggled to find any effective response to their opponents’ style of play and rarely managed to seriously threaten Unai Simón. The Spanish goalkeeper, with several excellent saves and well-timed interventions off his line, successfully neutralized France’s attempts to exploit quick transitions. Overall, France have little reason to feel they let a major opportunity slip away, as Spain were clearly the superior team throughout the match.
England’s defeat, on the other hand, was far more painful. Thomas Tuchel’s men held the lead against Argentina for much of the game and looked destined to reach the final. However, the England manager opted to protect the advantage in the closing stages by adopting a more defensive approach. That decision ultimately proved costly, as England spent almost the entire final phase of the match pinned back in a deep defensive block, allowing Argentina to complete a dramatic comeback.
In terms of individual quality, there is very little to separate these two teams. However, the psychological aspect could prove decisive. France were beaten by what was objectively the better side and have little reason to dwell on missed opportunities, while England are likely to find it much harder to move on from the manner in which they let a place in the final slip away. For that reason, France appear more likely to approach this match with greater freedom and confidence, and that could be enough to overcome England and secure third place at the World Cup.
