Over 0.5 goals betting market – Meanings and how to use it!
One of the many other markets you can bet on rather than just who will win, lose or draw a game is how many goals will be scored within a game. In this type of market, you don’t care which team scores the goals or how they are scored.
One of the nice things about all the different over goals markets is that as soon as the game reaches that number of goals, your bet wins, and nothing further in the game can influence that. No 96th equalisers will spoil your day. The over 0.5 goals market is the most likely of all the over/under markets to happen in a game, as all that needs to happen for your bet to win is for one goal to be scored
What is Over 0.5 Goals In Betting?
Betting on a game to finish with Over 0.5 goals is a very easy market to understand. You are betting on the game having at least one goal. If the game has more goals, your bet still wins. It doesn’t matter which team scores or the method of the goal. If VAR does not rule it out, the goal will be enough for you to win your bet. So in short, your bet will lose if the game ends in a 0-0 draw.
Cup games get more complicated because the goal must be scored in regulation time, which is the regular 90 minutes plus any injury time. If the game is 0-0 at the end of regulation time and a team goes on to score in extra time, it won’t count and your bet will be settled as a loss.
Where can I bet on Over 0.5 goals?
Because most games have at least one goal, you will come across sites with all the other over/under markets but won’t have the option to bet on Over 0.5 goals. However, the majority of sites will have this market available. You will also come across some sites with it as the option on some games but not all.

Over 0.5 goals – Betting Definition
In the betting market with over 0.5 goals, earning a refund is impossible because the 0.5 decimal point stops any chance of a “push” (when neither the bookmaker nor the bettor wins).
- Over- This makes it clear that whatever the figure for this market is, you must be over that amount for your bet to win
- 0.5 – The bookmaker sets different limits for each bet. It’s impossible for something to happen 0.5 times. This tells us the stat we’re betting on can not happen, you can only be over or under that figure
- Goals—This tells us what event within the game we are betting on. In this case, we are betting on the number of goals scored.
So, just in case there is any confusion, when you bet on over 0.5 goals, you are betting on one goal or more being scored within regular time plus injury time. So the only way you can lose this bet is if the final score is 0-0
Over 0.5 goals odds
Everything so far has sounded positive and it should be reasonably easy to pick a game with at least one goal. Unfortunately, for this reason, the odds on over 0.5 goals in a game are some of the worst to bet on within any match. When writing this, even the leagues with the fewest goals and most 0-0 still have at least one goal scored in 80% of their games.
This means the odds offered won’t win much if your bet wins. For this reason, many people bet on several games and form an accumulator bet to improve the odds. This will increase your odds, but you will need all games to have at least one goal for the bet to win

What betting markets are similar to over 0.5 goals?
- Over 1.5 goals—Similar principle to betting on over 0.5 goals, but with the key difference that you need at least two goals to be scored in regulation time. So if the game were to end 0-0 1-0, or 0-1 your bet would lose. If there is any other scoreline, your bet will win.
- Over 0.5 First Half Goals—Similar to betting on the whole game, this bet requires a goal to be scored in the first half. For this bet to win, you only need one goal to be scored, and it doesn’t matter who scores it or how it is scored.
Tips and strategies for betting on over 0.5 goals
There are two main strategies for betting on over 0.5 goals. The first is to accept that the odds are poor but still look for the best odds you can find. When two teams with poor goalscoring records play each other, you may find the odds slightly higher—and we do mean slightly. You should consider anything around or over 1.07/1.08 as better odds. Keep your bets within your limits, and use single bets, and just go for small profits on each bet, looking to grow your profit gradually.
An alternative strategy is to combine multiple games. By this, we mean picking several matches and betting on all of them to have at least 0.5 goals. You will need all matches to have at least one goal, but the odds of all games will be combined to give you a more significant payout
This market has no right or wrong strategy, as any game between two teams could easily have at least one goal. If you’re happy with small profits and building them over time, then go for that idea.
If you would rather stick 50p on an acca and pick 10 games to have at least one goal, try this idea. Just make sure you bet within your means.
