What is an Asian Handicap +0.75 / -0.75 Bet?

what-does-asian-handicap-0-75-0-75-mean

An Asian Handicap is a type of bet where one team is given an advantage (or a disadvantage) before the game begins, and then the final result is decided taking that into account.  Why they are called “Asian” handicaps is not clear but it is objectively true that betting sites based in Asia used to offer this market a lot and so it is highly likely to be connected with that, and the saying just caught on. The numbers assigned to the handicap will be either zero, a quarter, a half, three quarters, or w whole number. Depending on exactly which you bet on will determine how the bet gets settled. We will explain exactly what a 0.75 handicap entails in this article.

The +0.75 / -0.75 has several parts to it that make it a bit different to the type of bet that you will probably be used to. Any Asian Handicap bet that uses a quarter or a three quarter is actually two bets rather than one. The bet stake is split into two and half of the money is bet on the half handicap and the other half on the nearest whole number. You can sometimes see the 0.75 handicap written as +0.5 & +1, it is the same thing.

We will go into more detail below…

What does -0.75 Asian Handicap Mean?

Like other bets you only enter one stake amount onto your betslip but you are placing two separate bets. Let's look at them one at a time:

  • -0.5 = This means that the team must win for this bet to be a winner, if it is 1:0 to them, after the handicap is applied it would be 1.5:0, they still win, it is no different.
  • -1 = This means that the team must win by MORE than one goal, because if they win by just one goal after the handicap is applied the score is now a draw. When you bet on an Asian Handicap if it is a draw after the handicap is applied then your stake is returned.

So you can see the average of both those handicaps is -0.75 and your bet will win or lose in the following scenarios:

  • If your team wins by 2 clear goals, then both of the bets will win.
  • If your team wins by just 1 goal then the -0.5 bet will win, but the -1 bet will push
  • If the game is a draw or your team loses then both bets will lose.

What does +0.75 Asian Handicap Mean?

This is the exact reverse of the above, instead of having a handicap against them the team you bet on is given a small head start. Again as before you only place one bet, and you will only get one payout in return, but the way the result is settled and the amount of the payout will be calculated as if it is two bets. This is why the “+0.75” bet can be called the “+0.5 & +1 bet”, because it is the same thing.

50% of your stake will be put on the +0.5 market, and the other half will be on the +1 market.

  • If your team wins or draws, the bet will win.
  • If your team loses but by just 1 goal then half of your bet loses but the other half is a push and your stake is returned.
  • If your team loses by 2 goals or more then you lose all of your stake.

Outcomes for Asian handicap 0.75 Examples

To explain properly it can help to show a real example*.

If you are betting on the 0.75 handicap market then in order to even up the odds the favourite will not be too much better, but still clearly the favourite. We are going to look at a UEFA Champions League game between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. Bayern Munich are the favourites with odds of around evens (Decimal 2) compared to Inter winning at 3/1 (Decimal 4).  To even things up adding a 0.75 handicap the odds are:

  • Bayern Munich -0.75 @ 2.3
  • Inter Milan +0.75 @ 1.7

So if we place a bet of 10 on each, let us look at what each bet returns for each applicable score:

Asian handicap betting conclusion

As you will have noticed Asian Handicap bets are slightly more complex than other types of bet, because you have several different possible outcomes, it is not always as simple as win or lose. This is part of the appeal though, because it can be damage limitation when your bet does not win well at least you do not always lose everything.

The main purpose of these types of bets was originally to get the odds on either side winning closer to evens, which should encourage more people to bet on it. You do not have to bet on handicaps that do this though, the range of handicaps on a match will be wide and many of them may offer greater odds than the regular to win market if that is what you want.

FAQ. Frequently Asked Questions
  • The way the bet is split into two halves and the way that the bet is settled is exactly the same, the difference is that rather than betting on the difference in the team's scores you are betting on the total number of goals scored. You will be able to bet over or under the amount.

  • When you are placing an Asian Handicap bet the 0.5 means that one team has either a head start of a disadvantage depending on if it is 1 - or a +. If it is a +0.5 you win if your team wins OR if it is a draw.

  • A zero means that both teams start with the same number of goals but that is the game ends as a draw, then all bets are refunded.
